We live in a world today where so often much of a person’s capital is determined by their ”brand” and their presented persona or image. As we go on this journey with Santa Muerte and her crew, we grapple with the impact and negative effects that come from the obsession with personal image. The story, while an adventure epic, is ultimately an exploration of ego, corruption, and the power of fear.
We are fascinated by pirates, the true history, the legends and exaggerations, and the way they’ve been immortalized in media and culture. Pirates were mutineers, criminals, thieves and murderers; they hunted vulnerable targets in a wider and untamed world, absent the safety and security we take for granted today.
Some pirates were desperate poor folk who were doing what was necessary to survive. Some were thrillseekers and adventurers, always driven toward a distant horizon. And a special few were in it for the glory and infamy, intent on clawing and cutting their way to their rightful place amongst the legends like Blackbeard and Black Sam Bellamy.
We love the wild mix of cultures, the unrestrained nature of the region, and, frankly, the gritty violence of it all. Piracy was bloody, messy, dirty, explosive, flashy, and wild. “Pirates of the Caribbean” gave us high fantasy with global stakes and fun monsters. “Black Sails” gave us a semi-historical look at the ugliness and vicious reality of piracy. This is a story about the spooky and thrilling place in between.
It is a dangerous life and the Devil is on your back, but it is going to be glorious.
